Lou has some sensible things to say about not only gurus but user experience:
(No) UX Gurus. . . UX is far broader than usability, IA, interaction design, and the many other related fields. . . I'd also argue that UX is not a field or a discipline, but an emerging awareness that's perhaps on its way to becoming a movement. I doubt that such an interdisciplinary area is likely to emerge as a full-fledged discipline any time soon, if ever. And perhaps there should never be a UX discipline, if that means homogeneity in how we think... [Bloug]
I'd have to agree that UX is not a discipline, yet the term gets tossed about as if we all know and agree what it means. It's in danger of being diluted in the way that "UCD" has come to mean (at least where I work) "the people who look out for our users" rather than a process for looking out for users. No one ever qualifies "user experience" with "positive" (much less with "negative"!), as if any user experience is a success for its designers.
