100 things about me

"A person should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful that God has implanted in the human soul." - Goethe

Quotes of the day

"Am I alive or thoughts that drift away? Does summer come for everyone? Can humans do what prophets say? And if I die before I learn to speak can money pay for all the days I lived awake but half asleep?"
  --Chris O'Connor

"The things that we have and that we think are so solid - they're like smoke, and time is like the sky that the smoke disappears into ... nothing is left but the sky, and the sky keeps on being just the same forever."
   --Booth Tarkington

"... and then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
  --  Anais Nin

There But For Fortune

It's been a lazy cold Saturday, and I've had no motivation for routine weekend domestic chores.  The rooms in my home glare back at me with silent indignation at the thought of having to wear their untidiness like week-old underwear for yet another day.

A kitten in my lap, the sounds of Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, and Simon & Garfunkel rising from Scott's laptop behind me; amidst yawns and stretches, full bellies and quiet contentment comes the irresistible desire to close my eyes and drift to sleep.

We listened to the peace protesters as they made their speeches in the bitter cold of Washington, D.C.  I keep hearing Jessica Lange's voice in my head and other louder voices repeating words once spoken by Martin Luther King.  Impassioned people making impassioned pleas for peace.  And at home we play Woodstock music downloaded to a laptop from a place called the internet.

There But For Fortune ...lyrics by Joan Baez

Show me a prison, show me a jail
Show me a prisoner whose face is growing pale
And I'll show you a young man with many reasons why
And there but for fortune
May go you or I

Show me an alley, show me a train
Show me a hobo who sleeps out in the rain
And I'll show you a young man with many reasons why
And there but for fortune
May go you or I

Show me the whiskey stains on the floor
Show me a drunken man as he stumbles out the door
And I'll show you a young man with many reasons why
And there but for fortune
May go you or I

Show me the country where the bombs had to fall
Show me the ruins of the buildings once so tall
And I'll show you a young land with so many reasons why
And there but for fortune
May go you or I -- or I

Biltmore Estate
George Vanderbilt created Biltmore Estate in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains more than a century ago as a retreat for family and friends.  I've visited Biltmore twice, and it's just spectacular.  My favorite room, of course, was the library.  If you love antiques, gardens and architecture, you'll enjoy the virtual tour.  The gardens are so beautiful, and each room in the home displays a unique character and charm.  Rich in history and amazingly crafted, it is without a doubt one of the South's loveliest treasures.
