100 things about me

"A person should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful that God has implanted in the human soul." - Goethe

Quotes of the day

"Man was born free and everywhere he is in chains."
--Jean-Jacques Rousseau, French philosopher, The Social Contract

"Some people surrender their freedom willingly but others are forced to surrender it. Imprisonment begins with birth. Society, parents they refuse to allow you to keep the freedom you were born with. There are subtle ways to punish a person for daring to feel. You see that everyone around you has destroyed his true feeling nature. You imitate what you see."
--James Douglas Morrison, lead singer of The Doors

The Bondwoman's Narrative

I'm still reading The Bondwoman's Narrative - more than half-way through it.   The book was written in the late 1850's and is the only known novel written by a female African American slave.  Her name was Hannah Crafts, and her writing is eloquent and heartbreaking.  This particular passage touched me deeply.  If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it.

"What do you think of it?  Doctors of Divinity Isn't it a strange state to be like them.  To shuffle up and down the lanes unfamiliar with the flowers, and in utter darkness as to the meaning of Nature's various hieroglyphical symbols, so abundant on the trees, the skies, in the leaves of grass, and everywhere.  To see people ride in carriages, to hear such names as freedom, heaven, hope and happiness and not to have the least idea how it must seem to ride, any more than what the experience of these blessed names would be.  It must be a strange state to be prized just according to the firmness of your joints, the strength of your sinews, and your capability of endurence."

Superbowl chili not required

We've done nothing around this house but sleep all day.  That's what happens when you get old and stay up past your bedtime the night before watching Time Cop on tv.  I did get up long enough to cook up a little breakfast (fried bologna and scrambled eggs with cheese), and now I'm feeling a tad guilty that I haven't even washed a load of clothes today.  But the house is so quiet and toasty warm, I just couldn't ignore the temptation of crawling back into bed, and now I'm groggy and lazy and wondering how I'm gonna make SuperBowl chili without having to get dressed and make a trip to the store.  No beans, no tomato sauce. On first thought, maybe I'll backup and punt.  Make burgers instead.  I could stay in my pajamas and sock feet, leave the bra in the drawer and not even brush my hair!  Am I a genius or what???

New Rocky Top Brigade Members

Seems the Rocky Top Brigade is growing by leaps, bounds and single shots quicker than Elvis could inhale a cheeseburger, and I'm late putting out the UT welcome mat.  So, here's a big WELCOME to the finest new members of the RTB (listed in order of when I just spotted them at South Knox Bubba)

Welcome!  Jane of The Daily Rant

Welcome!  Manish of Damn Foreigner

Welcome! Donald Sensing of One Hand Clapping

Ya'll (yes that's how I spell it, have all my life and won't stop now) have great weblogs, and it'll be a pleasure to add you to my daily reading.  Well, uh, sometimes I don't quite get where I wanna go every day, else I'd already have known ya'll had been inducted...but I mean well  :)
