There are a large number of improvements in aac vs mp3 audio compression (more than a half dozen years of work by many of the same people helped insure this).
One piece that was used to highlight the differences is As I Lay Me Down to Sleep by Sophie B. Hawkins. (the sample is in 128kbps aac on the iTunes music store -- you will need OS X and iTunes to listen). Two versions show up - try the longer one. The percussion, organ and her voice all have real problems with mp3 even at 256kbps. This was one of the pieces used to catch the attention of some golden ears at a major music conservatory a few years ago.
