The Silk Road Reflections

Last summer on the Mall, the Folk Life Festival did something so amazingly different that it will be difficult for them to top. The Silk Road Festival was incredible. Beginning at the Capitol end of the Mall and continuing on for close to a mile was the Silk Road laid end to end from Japan to X'ian and beyond through India, the Steppes, through Levant and ending in a Venice Piazza. It was the journey that Marco Polo first made back when Europe was at its zenith. The spice trade brought the Europeans east overland.

Kim Stanley Robinson's book The Years of Rice and Salt has become my favorite work of his, taking place mostly on the cities of the Silk Road, Samarkand and Beijing and throughout India. The painted history of these cultures is absolutely enthralling.

Now there's a blog about one group that will be travelling the Silk Road. The blog itself is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, courtesy of Sekimori, whose work elsewhere is nothing short of amazing.
