Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Too Many Meetings

Some days all I do is meet. It becomes mind numbing (along with the numbing of other areas). I'm in the middle of the second day of retreats. Yesterday it was Technical Services turn. Today UEN Instructional Services is throwing this party.

Richard Siddoway, former Utah Legislator, author and The Electronic High School Principal, has lead a discussion to uncover and prioritize future needs. He just said something good:

People will do almost anything you ask them to do and resist anything you tell them to do......

Words to remember. Perhaps the shortest management seminar ever......

Technical Retreat

For the second year we met with the UEN Technical Services Subcommittee to develop a Regional Priorities List. We met for about 5 hours and the attendance was good.

I was amazed that the topic that produced the greatest amount of discussion was the future of video. Perhaps that is a result of the success UEN has enjoyed in the past coupled with the uncertainty of the future of video. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a clear path for the future of video in distance learning.

Whatever the path, it is anything but clear.

The meeting was successful. We did develop a new priority list, at least the beginning of one. In its development more work was created for me. This is beneficial in that it creates a fairly clear direction for the next year. The additional work will bring next year's projects into focus.......
