Jim's Pond - Exploring the Universe of Ideas
"Beware when the great God lets loose a thinker on this planet. Then all things are at risk. It is as when a conflagration has broken out in a great city, and no man knows what is safe, or where it will end." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

AT&T Labs

The name has changed. Still, interesting things are happening at AT&T Labs. I spent the day there yesterday. A full schedule and a hectic drive back to JFK didn't leave me with any time to get something written yesterday.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s I had the opportunity to visit Bell Labs several times. Once in Middletown, NJ and a few times at the Denverworks facility. It was always an impressive show.

That first visit to Denver got me thinking about what it would take to develop "IHC Labs." Each subsequent Bell Labs visit reinforced by desire to work in a development environment. I spent time over the past few days thinking about my Bell Labs experiences.

"IHC Labs", as I envisioned it, will never exist. A UEN version stands little chance of seeing its creation. But what if we could develop Utah Labs? This could be a network think-tank devoted to exploring new horizons in networking.

Utah Labs would be a collaboration between education, government, military and commercial entities. The work of Utah Labs would build on a rich heritage of Utah involvement in national networking trends. After all, Utah was one of the first four ARPANET sites. To date, we have not realized the same prominence as the other three. I believe it is time to rectify this error. This can be done with the emergence of Utah Labs.........
