consider this quote from E.L. Doctorow: [ via Cory Doctorow ]

"Planning to write is not writing. Outlining, researching, talking to people about what you're doing, none of that is writing. Writing is writing. . . . Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.
[Critical Section]
I agree...but often it is good to first spend some time setting up the tools, deciding on which color pen you might want to use, turning off the ringer of the phone, pulling the shades, making yourself a pot of coffee and then jump...yes, it's planning and not writing, but it'll make the writing process easier...

I guess it is different with music...recording music might involve more "planning" than writing: check strings to hear whether they are still in prime condition or have to be changed, turn on tons of equipment, let the microphone warm up, let the pre-amp warm up etc. etc.......

Aaron Swartz: "Stealing is wrong. But downloading isn’t stealing... Downloading may be illegal. But 60 million people used Napster and only 50 million voted for Bush or Gore. We live in a democracy. If the people want to share files then the law should be changed to let them."

Certainly an interesting statement, if true. More people used Napster than are willing to vote...what does that say? I would imagine it means that IF they really cared about file-sharing they would be able to use the democratic process to get laws changed...they would have an instant majority - if they could agree on something....
