How about giving brilliant Bill Murray a second Globe for best and funniest acceptance speach?

An anonymous reader writes "We have long heard stories about how the record companies cheat their own artists with audit techniques that would make Enron blush. They are already applying the same techniques to the revenues they draw from digital download sites like Apple iTunes, which is one reason many artists have refused to allow their music be sold through them (those who can control it at least). Looking to take a stand in the digital music arena before these practices become status quo Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno are starting a new union the "Magnificent Union of Digitally Downloading Artists" or MUDDA. Gabriel, co-founder of OD2 - an iTunes competitor - has that company as a first source to negotiate terms with the new union."

Yes! I convinced Ottmar to put up a tip jar; I hope he'll keep us posted on how it's going. I suspect he'll make more $ by encouraging people to copy his music and donate, than by dup'ing cds and selling them.

I'll keep this short:

Income - decreased
Work - increased
Independence - priceless

And there is always the next album.....

Swiss climate scientist Martin Beniston, using the cutting-edge regional climate model HIRHAM, argues that the record-breaking European heat wave of 2003 is an early warning of how European weather will be changing over the century, according to PhysicsWeb.

Simply Fab. Gary Santoro has collected a few links to weblogs with a 'Expressionist Fab' theme.

If it's got a name, it's not fluid anymore...if you can call it something it's already over...it's becoming marble instead of being clay or putty...it's like when I make a record: once the music is mixed and I think of a title, it's all over. Everything can change until that moment, but nothing changes after that moment.

20 Years Mac. This comes straight from the American Invisible:
Sagan was known to have a bit of an ego. In 1994, Apple Computer began developing the Power Macintosh 7100. They chose the internal code name "Sagan", in honor of the astronomer. Though the project name was strictly internal and never used in public marketing, when Sagan learned of this internal usage, he sued Apple Computer to use a different project name. Though Sagan lost the suit, Apple engineers complied with his demands anyway, renaming the project "Butthead Astronomer". Sagan sued Apple for libel over the new name, claiming that it subjected him to contempt and ridicule. Sagan lost this lawsuit as well. [The Cartoonist]
I remember hearing this story...what a riot....

The history of Mulled wines date back to medieval times where these wines were named after the physician Hippocrates and called Ypocras or Hipocris. Thought to be very healthy, considering wine at the time being more sanitary than drinking water, these heated drinks probably did sustain their health through the cold winter months..
Hm, it's cold outside....perfect excuse....

More proof that the dollar is being devalued: it's lost its sanctity to marketing execs. A new TV show about dope-dealers is being promoted through stickers on dollar bills that will be given away in bars:
The network is distributing 50,000 one-dollar bills in trendy bars in Los Angeles and New York. Affixed on each of those bills: a removable sticker bearing the USA Network logo, along with the title and airtime of the three-part miniseries.

Based on the movie of the same title, the show is about drug dealers, users, and the position of cash at the center of drug culture lifestyles.

Subscription - Pt. 5
Wow, so this subscription thing is really happening, isn't it...I'm so excited! - Adam Solomon • 1/18/04; 12:07:27 PM
Yes, I am excited about it as well. We are going to take a couple of weeks to figure out how many downloads our current agreement with the provider supports and how much space we are currently renting on the server. Then we are going to figure out how many members we will need to make a subscription service work. Other details to be figured out are: AAC audio files encoded at 128kbps sound much better than mp3 files encoded at that rate, but less people may have AAC players. To offer music in two or more different formats takes up more room. which adds up once we reach a few hundred songs, and also takes more time to encode and check etc....I am tempted to stay with mp3 files, even though they don't sound as good, because they are so wide-spread.
