Just a few short weeks after I suggested that Ottmar put up an online tip jar, it's there:"The PDF for nouveaumatic is not ready yet, but we are working on that. You can also type in this URL: www.ssri.biz/donation, which we will print on all future CD packages, like Jon's Transit, due in about a month and my Luna Negra album La Semana in May." I just tossed in $30, because I've definitely copied The Santa Fe Sessions for at least six people...
Great work, Ottmar! [vedana.net] No, thank you for the idea, Eric. I really feel like we are getting somewhere with this. Together, we are all helping to define the future of music.

Subscription - Pt. 4 Spoke to Jon about the subscription idea this morning. His response to us possibly showing some QT video of rehearsals or soundchecks was....."Can we stage some fist-fights?"

Musiker - Musikant In the German language there exists the distinction between Musiker and Musikant, which I believe expresses the difference between the craftsman and the artist. Think of a musician who plays only cover tunes as a craftsman. Many classical musicians I would categorize as craftsmen as they are performing the composers work and don't improvise. Not art, but a lot of craft. Of course, occasionally a classical musician goes far beyond being a craftsman, because his or her interpretation of a score goes beyond mere reproduction and infuses the music with new life.On the other hand a punk guitarist who knows only two or three chords may be an artist because of his vision. Not a lot of craft, but art. Very tricky, this stuff, isn't it? I mean, I had a friend in art school who was a great draftsman, drew much better than me, but didn't have the ideas that would have turned this gift into artwork....Then there are famous fine artists who are not great craftsmen and great craftsmen who are lousy artists....very confusing, isn't it.

Real or Nanorex Someday, maybe sooner than we think, a great bottle of Chateau Margeaux or Sammarco can be re-created molecule by molecule with nano-tech. In every way this would be the same bottle as the "real" bottle, same molecular structure, same smell, identical taste etc.The difference would be that one bottle was made in a lab with relatively little sweat and work and the other represents decades and centuries of knowledge of grapes and the art of winemaking, a healthy amount of work by many people, and a little luck in the form of the right weather..... Let's take another example: on one hand we have a sculpture whittled by an African artist and on the other hand we have a nano sculpture, identical in every way to the first sculpture, down to the atom count....Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, I think we need to discover and understand the difference between these two objects. Maybe we'll drink some nano-wine during the year and spend the big bucks on the real bottle for a birthday...maybe we will be able to distinguish between the two simply because we trust the source or maybe there will be nano-laws that enforce clear labeling of nano-tech items - it almost doesn't matter...I think we should cherish the difference and the difference is the mental and physical work and emotion and even anguish that went into the object.

This site collects phone numbers from payphones around the world, so you can lookup any payphone anywhere and call it -- for example, to practice a foreign language or just to have random conversations with bewildered strangers.[Minding the Planet] Interesting. This could be the cheap way to learn a foreign language!

Breakthrough Poised for Organic Solar Energy: "Through research with organic photodetectors, Siemens researchers revealed they were recently able to increase the efficiency of printed organic solar photovoltaic (PV) cells from three to over five percent. .. [The] photoactive layer of the cell has a thickness of approximately 100 nanometers, which corresponds to about 1/200th of the thickness of a hair. Since the polymers are printed on foil these solar modules are light-weight. Moreover, they are flexible and can be adapted to almost any shape. .. [They] achieve today a service life of several thousand sun hours, said Siemens. To start with, organic solar cells will first be applied in portable solar modules charging mobile telephones, satellite phones or navigation systems without requiring any connection to a main electrical supply. The first such products are expected to be sold in 2005, said the company. Siemens said that in some time it will be possible to achieve an efficiency of ten percent and a service life of 10,000 sun hours which corresponds to an operating life of approximately ten years. It is therefore conceivable to use organic PV in all main applications of conventional solar systems, said the company. " [Ken Novak: Future energy] [Mediaburn]

Abandoning the conventional combination of chair and desk, the NETSURFER rethinks our relationship to the computer and our surfing requirements. The semi-reclining position with the screen at eye level is designed to be comfortable for long periods. Pillows support the neck and lower back, arms and legs are supported on adjustable arm and footrests.
A design that's almost 10 years old.

Subscription - Pt. 3 Today a song I have been working on changed a lot and I was thinking that it would be very interesting to share the growth of a piece and a whole album with some people. Here is what I think a subscription service could offer: 1. Live recordings - we recorded every live show this year. 2. Rough Mixes, i.e. showing the layers of a song and snapshots of the process. The under-painting, the sketching etc. 3. QuickTime movies of rehearsals, and maybe eventually QuickTime live-broadcasting of a rehearsal.

TOKYO (AP) -- Your hands don't even need to be touching the steering wheel for it to start spinning back and forth aggressively, all by itself _ slowly guiding the car into the parking spot.
Parallel parking is designed to be a breeze with the Intelligent Parking Assist system, part of a new $2,200 option package for Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius gas-electric hybrid in Japan. Update: I still don't have my Prius...I have been asked whether I would like to pick a different color, but will wait for silver. - Thanks Dan!
