I didn't call into dispatch until almost noon today. I figured if they needed me on something, they would have called me. I was right--there wasn't much freight being delivered today.
Mr. T (day dispatch) said he would call back in 30-minutes and let me know of a possible rail container load. He called back and said that I could take such a load out of Kohler, WI and deliver it to one of the rail yards in Chicago, IL. So, in early afternoon, I said goodbye to the kids as they were on the way to a pool party up north with my wife and neighborhood friends and I left to do some trucking.
Upon arriving at the shipper in Kohler, I was told by security there that the trailer I was to be picking up had already left yesterday. Dispatch then confirmed this. So, I turned around and headed back to the warehouse. At least I'd be paid for the miles there and back. But I couldn't help thinking that I could have just as well gone to the pool party today. Oh well....One thing is for sure, they need to tweak the computer system that handles freight tracking and driver assignment. Otherwise, the company will begin hemorrhaging money if they leave the system unexamined. This is the 2nd time this week that I've been assigned to a load that was already taken (at least the 1st time I didn't leave the warehouse to pick up the freight at another location).
Tomorrow, I'll start a trek that will take me to North Dakota, Minnesota, and then back to Wisconsin. It will take me through part of the weekend to get back home.
miles driven = 123
