2003 Denver Mayoral Runoff Election
Don Mares and John Hickenlooper squared off in a debate yesterday for News 4 that'll be broadcast tonight at 6:00PM, according to the Rocky Mountain News [May 31, 2003, A tie for Mr. Nice Guy. They're disproving the notion that there are no nice guys in politics. Denver has two running for mayor.
John Hickenlooper has raised so much money in his election bid he ought to be able to help balance Denver's budget with left over dough from his campaign. The Rocky Mountain News [May 31, 2003, Hickenlooper's $1 million month] is reporting that he has raised over $1.9 million so far. He raised more money in May than Don Mares did in all of 2002 and 2003. Common Cause officials are probably in shock

Bill Littwin weighs in on Tuesday's election in his column today in the Rocky Mountain News [May 31, 2003, Littwin: Mares pours himself a brew ha-ha]. Says Littwin, "In his final ad, Mares basically concedes that the race has become mostly about Hickenlooper. What the voters will decide on Tuesday is whether Hickenlooper, still an unknown political quantity, is too great a risk to take or too great a risk not to."
