Cole Finegan Named Acting Chief of Staff
My boss announced today that Cole Finegan will be the acting Chief of Staff. I think it's cool that the Cherry Creek News ran the whole release.

Supremes
Blogs for Bush: "Fred Barnes over at the Weekly Standard has an excellent piece about how the Bush White House is fully aware of what sort of fight we'll have over the upcoming Supreme Court nominee. Boiled down, everyone is getting prepared so that the nominee isn't destroyed by leftwing slander as Robert Bork was back in 1987. That the left will attack whomever is nominated is a given, the difference will be in the tactics used to bring forth and defend the nominee."

TalkLeft: "Judy Keen of USA Today interviewed President Bush Monday about his choice of a Supreme Court replacement for retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor."

Western Primary?
Salt Lake Tribune: "Folks across the West pride themselves on their ability to stand on their own. But, if they want to have any say over the way the nation is governed, they are going to have to do a better job of standing together. This recognition has drawn the Democrat who is governor of New Mexico and the Republican who is governor of Utah to join those seeking to revive the Western States Primary. An old brainstorm of former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, that primary wasn't a big draw in 2000 and didn't even happen in 2004. But 2008, as Utah's Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and New Mexico's Gov. Bill Richardson see it, is a good chance to try again. We agree. " Thanks to the Western Democrat for the link.

Political Wire: "Robert Novak reports that Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) is interviewing staffers for a presidential campaign. In addition, he says Biden's national ambitions 'may be reflected by a more partisan voting record in the Senate this year. He normally would be considered a probable vote for the Central American Free Trade Agreement, but administration officials have written him off as a 'no' vote.'"

Political Wire: "Former Sen. John Edwards claimed that 'presidential ambitions had nothing to do with his itinerary of Ohio, Michigan, Arizona, and New Mexico,' the Toledo Blade reports. Said Edwards: 'My campaign now is not a political campaign. It's a campaign to end poverty in this country.'"

Overturn Roe vs. Wade?
Political Wire: "A Los Angeles Times article on the possibility of a new Supreme Court justice helping to overturn Roe v. Wade notes 'the political irony that few on either side readily acknowledge -- but many are pondering -- is that Roe's demise could transform American elections by crippling the conservative political majority that opposes abortion and by giving new life to hobbled liberals who support the ruling's preservation.'

"'Strategists worry that overturning Roe would make abortion a top-tier political issue again, galvanizing liberals and moderates who have long assumed the issue was settled. At the same time, it would eliminate a major organizing principle of the evangelical movement that gained prominence in last year's elections.'"

Gonzales to Supreme Court?
Bull Moose: "The Moose asks whether the President is tough enough to stand up to Dr. Dobson?"

Dani Newsum: "I cried when I learned that Justice Sandra Day O'Connor had resigned her seat on the Supreme Court last week. Not because she was a judicial hero of mine - she isn't. That honor goes to the late Justices William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall. But I cried because on the bench, Sandra Day O'Connor turned out to be a fairer justice than I had ever imagined she would be. When O'Connor assumed her seat on the Court in 1981, I expected the worst. I was wrong. But I have every reason to believe her successor will be my - and the Constitution's - worst nightmare."

First Amendment
Here's a roundup of issues around the First Amendment from the Denver Post [July 5, 2005, "The right to free screech"]. From the article, "It just feels more egregious today because much of the name-calling and tough language arrives without context. Political life has surrendered long speeches, fat pamphlets and subtle language for whatever fits into a sound bite."

Water Rates in Colorado
A picture named irrigationsmall.jpgHere's the third article in the Rocky's series on water use and conservation in Colorado, dealing with water rates [July 5, 2005, "Living with less but paying more"]. They write, "Water rates have soared in Colorado in the past four years as utilities have scrambled to cover drought-related declines in sales and to buy more of the much- sought-after liquid. Monthly service charges have jumped an average of 25 percent, basic water-use fees are up 9 percent, and fees for high-volume water use have surged 56 percent on average, according to a 10-city survey on water rates conducted by the Rocky Mountain News."

The Rocky Mountain News is running a story about the imminent demise of a 100 year old ditch system in North Boulder [July 5, 2005, "In the trenches over a ditch"]. From the article, "The Silver Lake Ditch spread a green carpet across the arid northwest quadrant of this city in the late 19th century. Now city officials and residents are embroiled in a dispute over whether the 117-year-old irrigation system is worth preserving in an age of computer-controlled sprinklers and municipal water mains."
