Referendums C and D
The Denver Post editorial staff, citing a poll taken last week, thinks that Referendum C needs a boost from supporters [July 19, 2005, "Referendum drive needs a summer jolt"]. From the editorial, "The poll last week showed that Colorado voters are evenly split on Referendum C, which would allow the state to keep more tax revenues over the next five years to pay for critical programs. No surprise there. What raised our eyebrows, though, is that an overwhelming majority has already formed an opinion - with just 15 percent of those surveyed saying they're undecided. Referendum D would allow the state to borrow up to $2.1 billion for roads, schools and police and firefighter pensions. The poll found 45 percent against, 39 percent in favor and just 16 percent undecided."

Tancredo for President?
Despite the sage advice from Mt. Virtus yesterday Tom Tancredo does not intend to apologize for his "Nuking Mecca" comment, according to the Denver Post [July 19, 2005, "Tancredo won't back down"]. Quoting the congressman, "I'm not suggesting we do it. I have nothing to apologize for in that respect. I'm simply saying to have a good discussion on this issue, a thorough discussion on what is perhaps the most serious kind of possible situation we could face as a civilization, that you cannot simply take things off the table because they are uncomfortable to talk about."

Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [July 19, 2005, "Tancredo: No apology"]. From the article, "He (Tancredo) stressed that he was not advocating an attack on Islamic holy sites, but that counterattacks had to be considered - and perhaps telegraphed ahead of time. That way, he said, both sides would know the stakes under a worst-case scenario, much as they did under the Cold War theory of 'mutually assured destruction.'"

Here's the text of Representative Tancredo's comments from the Rocky.

U.S. Representative Tom Tancredo introduced legislation yesterday that would make unlawful presence in the country a felony, according to the Denver Post [July 19, 2005, "Bill counters Bush 'guest worker' plan"]. From the article, "Besides making unlawful presence in the country a felony, the proposed legislation would fund a "substantial" increase in border and immigration law enforcement. Also, employers who knowingly hire illegal workers could face jail...The measure would block public colleges and universities from offering in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who graduate from a state high school, unless the same rate is offered to all U.S. citizens...Under the measure, hospitals could only be reimbursed for treating illegal immigrants if they report citizenship information to the Department of Homeland Security."

Oval Office 2008: "Jack Moseley expresses a highly positive view of Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee in this column for the Arkansas News Bureau. Making the inevitable comparison between Huckabee and the other Arkansas Governor from Hope, Moseley says that 'Huckabee finds himself better positioned for a run for the White House than Bill Clinton was in 1991.'"

NewMexiKen: "Science scholars found to have entered the U.S. illegally as children now face deportation."
