Ed Quillen weighs in on Roe vs. Wade and abortion in his column in today's Denver Post [July 24, 2005, "If Roe vs. Wade is overturned, then every race for every seat in the state legislature could turn into a referendum on abortion. Education, highways, prisons, water, taxes - all these could be ignored once the activists get revved up about the 'sanctity of life.' Abortion will be legal in some states, and a felony in others. Zealots will push for a constitutional amendment, along with federal laws banning travel across state lines for an abortion. Enforcement will apply to poor women riding the bus to another state, not rich ones in private jets who can go to Canada or Switzerland or some other civilized country. It will be a mess that further clogs the court system and burdens law enforcement. Roe vs. Wade may have been a faulty decision by some legal reasoning, but at least it put the moral responsibility where it belongs - on the individual."
Hal Crowther: "What's a radical under the new corporate totalitarianism? If you wonder sometimes whether everyone in your family is human, play them Bruce Springsteen's The Ghost of Tom Joad, a collection of songs that challenge you to care about Americans with no power, few breaks, few options. If one of your tribe mutters something about 'bleeding-heart liberals,' well, he has no heart, but he has a great chance to get ahead in the cannibal society George W. Bush and John Bolton represent."
Tom Tancredo has a column in today's Denver Post [July 24, 2005, "Bigger sins than offending"]. From the column, "Without question, my comments have prompted strong reactions from many quarters, but they have also served to start a national dialogue about what options we have to deter al-Qaeda and other would-be Islamic terrorists."
Update: Owen Burnett sends in a different link to the column.
Dani Newsum: "Heck, I even took him (Tom Tancredo) out to lunch on my dime after he was first elected to Congress in 1998. I liked the man, but knew that he had no business being within 500 miles of Washington D.C."
Jeralyn Merrit writes, on the 5280 Weblog, "The Rocky Mountain News today profiles James Dobson's increasing political clout."
Political Wire: "Sen. George Allen (R-VA), 'the hottest early prospect for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, blundered on his visit to New Hampshire on May 3 by conducting two fund-raisers there,' Robert Novak says."
