Western Water?
Deseret News: "Call it a not-so-harmonic convergence for water-starved communities in the West. On one hand, the 470 dams, 58 hydroelectric plans and 300 other facilities administered by the Bureau of Reclamation are inching past old age to where some are decrepit. In fact, the average age of the facilities is now more than 50 years, and many are well beyond their expected life span. Coming the other direction is suburban sprawl, which has dramatically increased the demand for more and better quality water." Thanks to the New West for the link.

Blogher
Lisa Stone writes, "And I have to thank Tony Perkins. Because on a day when a male journalist I have long respected but just met challenged BlogHer to me in a private conversation as 'anachronistic,' I find the best proof of BlogHer's value to women in the speaker list for Always On."
Dave Winer: "Reading Lisa Stone's piece above, all of a sudden I understand why the BlogHer conference is both a good idea, and unfortunately necessary. Not enough women have leading positions in the tech world, at least according to the people who choose speakers for industry conferences."

Clinton for President?
Political Wire: "Chuck Todd comments on Hillary Clinton's fundraising prowess and notes the numbers she's posting 'should erase whatever doubt remains with some (mostly on the Democratic side of the aisle, believe it or not) that she'll run in 2008. Clinton's not just 'being prepared' with her fund-raising, she's sending a message.'"
Wesley Clark: "I am very interested in service to the country and want to help in any way I can, I haven't ruled anything out."
Brian Schweitzer: "These people are kooky." Seems as though the Montana governor wants to stay put in the Last Best Place. Thanks to the Western Democrat for the link.

Tancredo for President?
Tom Tancredo has succeeded in stoking the conversation around the issue of retaliation against terrorists. Most of the conversation is focused on the Congressman however, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 20, 2005, "World reacts angrily"]. From the article, "From Turkey, from Russia and from the desk of Howard Dean - angry reaction to Rep. Tom Tancredo's threat against Muslim holy sites came from around the world Tuesday...Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, issued a statement calling Tancredo 'utterly careless.'"

John Roberts for Supreme Court
TalkLeft: "I think it's too soon to start opposing Judge John G. Roberts. Most of us knew nothing about him before tonight. He's only been a Judge for two years. Before that he was deputy solicitor general. The legal arguments he made while working for the Government or as a corporate lawyer may or may not reflect his personal values, or how he would rule as a Supreme Court Justice."
The Moderate Voice: "It might be too early to judge John Roberts, but he is, as Wolf Blitzer just said, 'a rock-solid conservative'...Bush could have gone a number of different ways, but this one's clearly for the base."
Blogs for Bush: "Associated Press reports, 'President Bush chose federal appeals court judge John G. Roberts Jr. on Tuesday as his first nominee for the Supreme Court, selecting a rock solid conservative whose nomination could trigger a tumultuous battle over the direction of the nation's highest court, senior administration officials said.'"
The Rocky Mountain News tracked down Senator Salazar and Senator Allard to get their initial reaction [July 20, 2005, "Colorado senators hint at how they might vote"]. From the article, "Sen. Ken Salazar said he had never heard of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. before Tuesday night, so he's not about to prejudge his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court...Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Loveland, said he expects a relatively smooth confirmation, since two years ago the Senate confirmed Roberts to a seat on the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals with no opposition."
Juan Cole: "By nominating a man, Bush reduced the number of women on the Supreme Court. Sandra Day O'Connor is no progressive, but she knew what it was like to be locked out of the Old Boys Club, and she ruled in favor of women's issues like affirmative action and reproductive rights."
Mt. Virtus: "The President's nomination of John Roberts to fill Justice O'Connor's vacancy on the Supreme Court - the first such change in 11 years - is such an intriguing and momentous development that I thought I'd take a moment to survey what some of the leading bloggers are saying about it. Kind of a snapshot in time."
The Moderate Voice: "It has finally begun."
