Rural Broadband
New West: "The last time I wrote about the effort to bring high-speed Internet service to Four-Mile Canyon, where I live, I got a response from Katrina Harms, a member of the Magnolia Road Internet Cooperative. One of the largest of such providers in the state of Colorado, the co-op has been providing service to the mountainsides and canyons along Magnolia Road, above Boulder, for three years now, and it's one of the real success stories of the community-based movement to bring true broadband to rural areas where the commercial service providers have failed, or declined, to penetrate...

"Westerners, though, have a long tradition of fending for themselves and creating communities in the face of odds, distance, and rough terrain. The Magnolia Road co-op continues that tradition."

A picture named schweitzersmall.jpgWestern Democrat: "Ever since Emmett O'Connell pointed out the sudden proliferation of Brian Schweitzer for President blogs, we've been paying attention. Well, it looks like one of them is picking up steam."

Blogs for Bush: "During the call, we were given a special sneak preview of the new RNC website, which is expected to launch some time next week. The new site includes a new blog, which we were told will allow visitors to post comments."

Gonzales to Supreme Court?
A picture named nuclear.jpgPolitical Wire: "The National Journal's Insiders Poll finds that a majority of Republican lawmakers believe it would be better for the president to nominate Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to the Supreme Court than a conservative jurist like Appeals Court Judge J. Michael Luttig. Twenty-nine Republicans would prefer a Gonzales nomination, whereas 19 would rather have a conservative like Luttig."

Western Democrat: "We don't often write about judges, Supreme they may be, or not. But, the West has a good track record of sending great Justices back east to sit on the Supreme Court. My favorite is obviously William O. Douglas. In all of this SCOTUS scribbling, it shouldn't be lost on anyone that Sandra Day O'Connor was of the West."

TalkLeft: "Reuters has a good article today on the influence blogs will have in the upcoming battles over Supreme Court nominations."

TalkLeft: "The New York Times reports this morning that 56 Senators were not around the last time a Supreme Court nominee came before them. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) now leads the Senate Judicary Committee which has only 8 of 18 members with prior experience. Specter had a re-election fight on his hands after the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearing where he was less than kind to Anita Hill's allegations."

Piglet Report Pulled
The Rocky Mountain News editorial stafff blasts the Independence Institute's piglet report [July 9, 2005, "Bogus spin on Ref C"]. From the editorial, "Yes, there is waste in state government. And yes, the Independence Institute's 'Piglet Report' identifies several examples. But as an argument against two ballot measures that would increase state revenues, the report is almost laughable. And yet this is what the report purports to be. Independence Institute officials were not entirely happy with the document, either, since they ended up pulling it from their Web site. And no wonder: Anyone reduced to citing the expenditures of $10,400 on a 'Big Blue Bear film' and a few thousand dollars on fireworks at a state university as arguments against Referendums C and D is flirting with foolishness."

The Denver Post's Bob Ewegen takes on the opponents of Referendums C and D in his column today [July 9, 2005, "Colorado's true budget picture"]. He writes, "Prevarication is not unusual in politics, and it isn't limited to the opponents of the Colorado Recovery Act, as the C and D twins are labeled. But the opponents are being especially loose with their facts because they know the easiest way to defeat a ballot proposal is to sow doubt and confusion. By their cynical logic, even if they get caught in a fib, the process of trying to set the record straight may leave the voters confused and distrustful - and likely to vote 'no.'"
