Allard on O'Connor
U.S. Senator Wayne Allard (via email): "On the Friday before the Fourth of July weekend, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her retirement.

"The nation owes Justice O'Connor a debt of gratitude. In accepting a lifetime appointment as a guardian of the Constitution, Sandra Day O'Connor dedicated her life to the service of her country and the rule of law. I will continue to push for the confirmation of all of President Bush's judicial nominations, and I hope that in the upcoming debate, the Senate will move expeditiously to fulfill its obligation of advise and consent.

"As a Westerner, Justice O'Connor had an understanding of the importance of water and water law to our Western way of life. Colorado and the West benefited from her expertise to an extraordinary degree. I will ask the President to nominate a Supreme Court justice with experience in Western resource law.

"It is my hope that the deliberative process for confirming a new nominee to the court is treated with great respect. In addition, I urge my colleagues in the Senate to act expeditiously once the President forwards the nomination to the Senate."

Actually it's Advice and Consent. Coyote Gulch wonders if there are any Westerners with water law knowledge amongst the possible nominees?

Sunflower to Elitchs
North Denver News: "Sunflower Market has signed a lease for a 28,000 square-foot market at the corner of West 38th Avenue and Wolff Street in Highlands Garden Village (HGV). Sunflower Market is an affordable healthy food market, featuring a large selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and vitamins, presented in a farmer's market format.

"A previous plan to place a Wal-Mart grocery ended in controversy after the plan faced wide community opposition. 'We are delighted that Sunflower Market has decided to serve the North Denver community from the Highlands Garden Village site,' said Chuck Perry, developer of HGV. 'Sunflower Market is a wonderful retailer offering fantastic prices. The market will be a great community asset, and a strong catalyst to attract other retailers to the site and the adjacent area.'"

A picture named irrigationsmall.jpgHere's a short history from the Cortez Jounal about the Dolores Project, that brings water to the Ute Mountain Reservation near Four Corners. They write, "At one time not that long ago the Ute Mountain Ute people were not only isolated and poverty-stricken, but also without water rights. About a half century ago, the federal government took tribal water out of the downstream Mancos River for an upper-basin project."

Referendums C and D
The State government does not need more money due to it's wasteful ways according to critics of Referendum C from today's Rocky Mountain News [July 8, 2005, "State wastes lots of cash, ballot-measure foes say"]. From the article, "But much of what the report calls overspending - including locking up drug users, prosecuting anti-trust cases and employing a lieutenant governor - others call core government functions. The Independence Institute, a think tank based in Golden, identified the alleged government waste in a draft report it recently posted online by mistake. The 'Piglet Report,' at http://www.taxincrease.org, warns voters against ballot measures Referendum C and Referendum D."

Tancredo for President?
Tom Tancredo was in Iowa yesterday, according to the Rocky Mountain News [July 8, 2005, "Tancredo peddling his message in Iowa"]. From the article, "Rep. Tom Tancredo started barnstorming through eastern Iowa on Thursday, talking immigration to religious conservatives and stepping up his flirtation with the 2008 presidential race."

Reggie Rivers tries to put one immigration issue into perspective in his column in today's Denver Post [July 8, 2005, "The misguided furor over illegals"]. He writes, "We seem to have lost our sense of proportion when it comes to illegal immigration. Yes, it's against the law to sneak across the border. Yes, there are so many people coming into the United States that it's a problem. Yes, we need to devise solutions to deal with the people who are already here and stanch the flow of new immigrants."

Beauprez or Holtzman for Governor?
Here's a look at the Republican sides in the Governors race from the Rocky Mountain News [July 8, 2005, "Off to a cranky start"]. From the article, "The Republican primary for governor has turned testy, though the election is more than a year away. Endorsements, fundraising and even support for Referendum C have inspired finger- pointing and 'did not, did so' talk between camps of the two candidates, U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Arvada, and former University of Denver President Marc Holtzman."
