IT needs details regarding specific initiatives to ensure the required architecture and resources are in place. Rather than being stymied by the lack of formal business planning, IT planners should work directly with business unit leaders, when necessary, to obtain the level of detail required for IT planning and facilitate the creation of a business unit plan that identifies the projects to be executed.

Microsoft, 8/16/02:  Microsoft patches Windows 2000 flaw, SQL holes

MICROSOFT THURSDAY RELEASED a patch for a vulnerability it called "critical" that could allow an attacker to take complete control of Windows 2000 systems. The company also released a cumulative patch for SQL Sever 7.0 and 2000 that repaired a new security hole.

c|net, 8/16/02:  Dell cooks up prix-fixe IT menu

Dell Computer is dishing out new IT services, a la carte.

Dell's Professional Services group is promoting a new menu of services--such as moving data to new storage equipment or installing new servers--for fixed prices that it claims are lower than its competitors'.

In a sense, Dell is trying to take the mystery out of services in the same way it did for PCs.

The New York Times, 8/16/02:  Dell Profits Are Up 11% for Quarter

The Dell Computer Corporation, continuing its elbows-out assault on the rest of the computer market, announced yesterday that its second-quarter profits had improved and product shipments had increased at a time when other computer makers are suffering.

The company, which is the second-largest maker of personal computers, said that it would be making a big push into the markets for computer printers and hand-held devices, and also raised its revenue projections for this quarter.
