Preliminary Thoughts on the iSight

Here is an unorganized jumble of thoughts about the iSight:

  • Its the 1st webcam worth owning.  Period the end.  The device is just plain wonderful.
  • If you have any errors making it work then you should just re-install OSX.  I couldn't have made this work without Francois' patience and support.  Thx man.
  • iChatAV is quite good.  Apple did a nice job.
  • www.evological.com makes it a real uploading webcam.  Thanks to the person who recommended this to me (and I can't remember your blog; sorry).
  • Performance on iChat AV can pull down the entire machine.  I actually recommend dumping video often and just using the audio portion.  That works well.
  • iChat AV needs a peer to peer option so it doesn't go over the AIM network
  • iChat AV needs a secure option for encrypted communications (remember -- iChat AV isn't free; you have to buy Panther when its available to get it)
  • There needs to be a simple command & keystroke for "Save a Jpeg Right Now So I can email it to a friend".  If there is I can't find it.  And don't even mention to me the abortion that is grab.
  • Full screen mode is cool.
  • Limit your bandwidth to 500K.
  • iSight makes a classic webcam app like Yahoo IM look like a Model T
  • I need to work out better lighting to use the camera well.  So will you I bet.
  • Sleep mode on a laptop is just plain lame when you use iChat and you're not giving the system regular keyboard input
  • Working shirtless in the summer is inappropriate with iChat.  Keep a light shirt handy for those off the cuff conferences.

Overall?  Highly recommended.  Francois and I are using this more and more instead of the phone.

Interesting Apache Question

Matt has a really interesting Apache question.  Anyone have ideas?  I'm stumped.

Welcome to Feedster Once Again

Wow.  It was a ***busy*** week / week end.  Here are some of the changes you'll find at Feedster:

  1. We added discovery of rss feeds from www.bloglines.com -- Thanks guys!
  2. We pretty dramatically improved our indexing architecture / speed so you should see results flow into Feedster faster from now on
  3. We integrated **tada** advertising into Feedster!  Yes that's right.  Starting wednesday or thursday you'll be able to advertise on Feedster (I'll announce it then).  The only reason for the delay is a) paypal confirmation lag and b) paypal confirmation lag and c) you guessed it -- paypal.
  4. We fixed a ton of html widgetry stuff.  You'll find that the feedster results look more google-ish, work at 800 x 600, etc.
  5. Let me know if there are errors in the ads as they appear on your screens.  We tested on i think almost every browser combo and we like the results but before we charge anyone a dime, I want it perfect.
  6. Echo support for any Feedster search.  Implementing echo support was interesting and it made me realize that I think they are over specifying.  There's a lot of required elements like Author that we just plain don't know.  And probably never will.
  7. Repositioned the aggregator specific links.
  8. Added support for NewsMonster.
  9. Turned off the search explanation for right now.  Don't worry -- it will come back in a better fashion.

Told you we were busy.
