More on the LoonCam. Linda White, who I work with at GCI and have known for twenty years is an avid birder. She's been involved in the Anchorage Loon Project for several years. Here's what she clued me into on the LoonCam:
The floating Loon nest is Jean Tam's and Scott Christie's project. He designed and built it. They've had the loon island on the lake for around ten years and the past 5 - 6 years the loons have used it. There's too much people and dog activity on the shoreline for loons to nest so this is the alternative. My contribution over the years is to help them put it in the water in the spring and take it out in the fall and help with the cover. This spring, I helped Jean sew on the burlap top so predators (eagles, gulls) don't see the nesting loon. Chicks have successfully fledged but eagles are the big predator. This was Jean's idea for the loon cam and it's the first in the nation. She received grants from various organizations.
I find it somewhat ironic that one threatened species (the Bald Eagle) is the primary predator for another species in trouble - the Pacific Loon.
