We've had very high-hazy skies for the past week. The kind of haze that only a forest fire can generate (I took this picture yesterday morning at 6:00 AM on the way to a birding trip). I've been wondering where the fires are. Well it turns out that our high altitude smoke has come to us all the way from Eastern Russia where there are 645 fires burning. In Fairbanks, visibility is down to twenty miles. Check out this Anchorage Daily News article for the details and an absolutely fabulous picture.
This again drives home just how close the United States is to Russia. Everyone thinks that Russia is on "the other side of the world." Well guess what? We're neighbors! Close neighbors actually. Only three miles separates Russian Big Diomede Island from the U.S. Little Diomede Island.

Wine of the Night
We had a delightful dinner with Linda Duck and Brian Shortell at Sack's. The evening included two bottles of quite good French wine: a Margaux and a Puillac (sp?). Unfortunately, I was so whipped that I didn't get the info on either wine. What I can say is that of the two, I thought the Puillac was the better wine. Great, complex nose and slight earthy flavor. Quite good.

Ahhhhh....
It's Memorial Day Weekend!
The past four weeks caught up with me yesterday. I have definitely hit the wall and now need to be very careful that I don't descend into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome land. So, the prescription for this weekend is sleep.
Ahhh....
