Wine of the Night
Tonight's bottle of wine was consumed at Sack's with the Ski Boy and Pooh (Son of Ski Boy). A very nice, very classic Poulliac Bordeaux - 2000 Chateau Duhart Milon - a Lafite Rotshchild Property.
Very rich and complex nose - tanins and spices were right there upon first sniff. My nose is getting to the point, where I can nine times out ten know whether a wine is good, great, indifferent or bad just from the first sniff. If there's no schnozzle happening, the wine is probably destined for the dump bucket.
I've sort run out of adjectives to describe a well made French Bordeaux. The wines are multi-layered, complex, and really open up after breathing. This wine is no different. It's not a premiere grand cru. But it is certainly a very nice troisieme cru (3rd growth).
And Dr.L., you're just jealous. It's not the quantity of wine consumed. It's the quality and diversity!

This sad but hilarious little missive for Clemmie arrived today (Brad Yeary forwarded the e-mail on from its original author). You'll discover the author when you read to the bottom of the letter:
Please deliver the following message to my soon to be ex-Dog, Clementine.
Dear Clementine,
I just read your long time companion's blog. I thought I was your favorite. We've been together so many years. I just wish you had the courage to tell me yourself. Instead, I had to read about it in the local tabloid.
I'm hurt and have officially filed for divorce. I had no idea you were sneaking down to Chilkoots and cheating on me with this guy Alf. I thought I meant more to you than that.
I'm not asking for much, only 60% of your kibble alotment. In return, I will waive all rights to our supply of pig ears. They always meant more to you than they did me.
I'll love you always but I'm going to move on now. I my mother has been trying to set me up with this nice beagle on her block. She always said Bouviers can't be faithful. I should have listened. ...Sob...Sob...

I crawled out of bed yesterday at the crack of dawn to go birding with the local Audubon club. Fortunately, it wasn't a long crawl - the club was birding at the Lagoon and the Inlet Mud Flats. Mere feet from our front door
It was a totally perfect birding morning - sunny with superb light, absolutely still, and the tide was just going out. And boy, did we take advantage of the rare perfection. Lots of good birds:
- Dunlins
- Ruddy Turnstones. A Steph favorite - a very cool bird.
- Sanderlngs. These little guys were a bit confusing at first. We really thought they were Western Sandpipers. However, once we saw that they were they same size as the Dunlins, we realized that they were Sanderlings. Western Sandpipers are much smaller "Peeps" and their breasts are not nearly as white as the Sanderlings. See - it's this sort of minutia that we birders live for.
- Short Billed Dowitchers
- Hudsonian Godwits
- Savannah Sparrow. Their song is quite similar to a Red Winged Blackbird's. Just quieter.
- Lincoln's Sparrow. A very happy joyful song.
- Orange Crowned Warbler
- Common Snipe
- Lots of Bonaparte's and Herring Gulls
- The usual ducks
It's clear (actually clarity is the problem) that I need new binoculers. My trusy Nikon's are now out of alignment and it will cost a few hundred dollars and a trip to the factory to get them realigned. At that price, it's probably better to just get a new pair of binocs.
