Last night, actually early this morning, Peter saw a lynx (Lynx canadensis) walking up our front steps. (NOT the "puddy tat" to the left - that's just a reference picture for those who are not lynx savvy.)
Peter's lynx sighting is one of the great things about living in Alaska - you get to see wildlife on a semi-regular basis that very few others will ever see in their lifetimes. Peter's lynx was a gray, scruffy guy. They are very distinctive - much larger than house cats - more smallish-medium dog sized - with super tufted ears, a jacked up hind end (long rear legs) and really big feet.
Of course, when Peter told me about his early morning feline sighting, I was quite indignant - "Why didn't you wake me up?" But evidently, the lynx was moving quickly and there wasn't time to get me. Fortunately I've seen a lynx three different times in the past. Most recently was a sunny summer evening a few years ago - a gorgeous, absolutely not scruffy, large male was sitting in my front yard. He hung out for a half an hour. I of course did not have a camera at the time. sigh...
