Mom, Peter, and I traveled one of my favorite Alaska routes today - we took the Alaska Marine Highway from Valdez to Whittier. In Valdez, at the hideously early hour of 6:00 AM, we drove Jeeves (Peter's RX300 Lexus SUV) into the ferry's carhold and at 1:45 PM this afternoon we drove Jeeves out of the carhold into the pouring rain at Whittier.
I just adore the Valdez to Whittier run. Prince William Sound, glaciers, wildlife, open water, incredible tree lined rocky shorelines, birds, etc. Even on a cold, gray, and rainy day like today, it is still a transporting (pun intended) experience.
Me on the ferry deck. The ice burgs in the background are from the Columbia Glacier. Actually, as the Park Ranger informed us today, these are actually referred to as burg bits because they are less than 15 feet in size.
