The 2003 Alaska Run for Women
Today was the 10th Annual Alaska Run for Women. It is a major fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research. It is one of my favorite summer events - over 4000 women run or walk, the men work race support and hang out all along the trail cheering on their wives, girlfriends, mothers, daughters, sisters, etc. It is definitely a feel good event - although the whole sisterhood thing can go a tad over the top for me. I definitely cringe big time during the morning "We-are-a-sisterhood-at-one-with-each-other-and-the-universe" yoga warmup. Bah Humbug.

I was too sick to actually run/walk this year. So instead, Mom and I gathered for the GCI team picture at the race start and then went to the GCI water table at Elderberry Park. The water table was a total blast - volunteers, racers, and best of all, the bagpipers!

This is Derek Welton, Water Table Volunter and definite Fashion Victim.

Those bright yellow GCI Yellow Pages boxers are the brain child of Wilson Hughes, GCI's COO. He suggested to our Marketing Department that we should wear those shorts during the race. Marketing bought into it - they will do anything to purvey our products.

I too had a pair of those boxers. I wore them for the team picture and then promptly removed them.

So, what I want to know is where was Wilson in his yellow boxers? I think he owes the team and especially Derek some sort of special fashion viewing. On second thought, that is just too scary to contemplate.

The Apres Race BBQ
After the race, all the GCI racers and worker bees headed over to Linda Duck's and Brian Shortell's for the traditional post race BBQ. Is there anything better than sun, bbq, and beer and 11:00 AM? I don't think so!

Here's Alix and Peter sunning themselves on Linda's and Brian's glorious deck. Note the very lush lilac tree in the background. I think Alaska must be the lilac capital of the U.S.

There is no better place in the whole world than Alaska on a sunny day!

The Run for Women Decorated Porta Potty Competition
One of the race side shows are the gussied up porta potties.

This rent-a-can was decorated by Providence Hospital.

The Monkey Porta-Potty. We Alaskans feel a jungle theme is appropriate for any event!
