So. Yesterday morning, Clem and I saved our little neighborhood from being blasted to kingdom come.

At 6:00 AM, Clemmie and I were out for our morning constitutional when I noticed a faint wiff of non-canine gas from across the cul de sac. As we approached our neighbor's house, the ordor became quite strong. And then I heard a hissing sound.

I peered around the corner of the house and  there was the gas meter - hissing away.

Clemmie and I beat a hasty retreat. We zoomed into our house and immediately called Enstar. (Our neighbors were out of town - that's why I didn't go banging on their door yelling that they should evacuate - the house was fortunately already empty).

Enstar showed up - it turned out that the meter was encased in ice from the dripping roof . As a result the service line broke. Fortunately the timing was right and Clemmie and I found it before we were all launched into outer space.

All in day's work!!!!

Excellent article in yesterday's Daily News on our CEO and co-founder, Ron Duncan. I particularly like his comments on Alaska's fiscal situation:
The politics are going to mandate a compromise solution that is a selection of various sources of money. Probably the most important thing is to solve the problem, not how we solve the problem.

We also have to fix the Alaska disconnect. Most of us in the business community would like to see growth, because that's what provides the opportunity for our businesses to improve. But every time we bring more people into the state and more private-sector economic activity, we increase the burden on schools, public safety and the like. Today, there's absolutely no mechanism for that increased wealth or income to contribute anything back to the state. We've got to do something that at least gets us to break even where a new job doesn't cost the state anything.
