I'm off this evening to the memorial service for Jim Parsons.

It's going to be a packed, but, hopefully upbeat event. I really have a tough time at funerals. I could hire out as one those wailing mourners. I'm a big time sobber at these things. But I think Jim's service will be celebratory as opposed to funereal. But, just in case, I'm wearing my dark glasses and bringing lots of kleenex.

The service is being held in the Performing Arts Center - it's my guess that it will be packed. For such a little guy, Jim had a giant footprint. Heck, all of the state flags have been flying at half mast since last week in his honor.

Last Friday at 10:30 AM, I and another Government Hill Community Council member had a meeting with the Base Commander of Elmendorf Air Force Base. EAFB borders Government Hill so we have lots of common issues.

Anyhoo, we passed through the gate without any problem. But as we made our way to base headquarters, we had to pass through several security checkpoints. We could not figure out what was going on - even given post September 11th, the security was over the top.

Well, after much ado, we finally made it to headquarters - albeit about ten minutes late - and no one wants to be late to their meeting with the Base Commander.

We apologized profusely. The colonel just laughed and explained. Turns out that Vice President Cheney was due in for a whirlwind visit in about two hours. The Veep was stopping over on his way to Japan.

Well Duh! Details of the Veep's forthcoming visit and $1000 per person fundraiser for Lisa Murkowski had been in the news and gossip for days. Geeeeeeez...

Our meeting lasted about an hour. As we came out, we could see the VIP buses lined up around the block. The (pre-approved, pre-screened) crowds were definitely gathering.

Stuart and I just skeedaddled. Neither one of us were enamored with being that close to our esteemed Veep.
