This afternoon, the Ski Boy and I played our first nine holes of the year.

We had a blast. It was a typical Alaska first golf outing of the Spring:

  • Temporary Greens - makeshift greens that basically consist of the encircled portion of the fairway in front of the real greens. The temporary greens are pretty hilarious - the ground is soooooo bumpy and pockmarked. The act of putting becomes a vaudeville routine.
  • Piles and piles of moose nuggets everywhere. None of us have ever seen anything like it. We started chipping moose nugget shots at each other.
  • As we approached the 5th "green", an overwhelming stench wafted towards us from the woods. There was a moose carcass just upwind of us.
  • Some of the sand traps still had little snow berms nestled in the corners.
  • An absolutely huge bald eagle kept us company on the 5th and 6th holes.
We had an absolute blast - we hit lots of crappy shots but we also gripped and ripped it several times.

Last night, the Ski Boy and I caught a fantastic show by Diavolo dance company.

They performed their stunning new piece, Dreamcatcher. The centerpiece is a giant steel dreamcatcher that rotates and spins as the dancers move all over it. Very "Cirque de Soleil meets modern dance."

The dancers have excellent technique and are extremely athletic and buff - including the women. They all have to be. Their work involved a phenomenal amount of upper body strength.

The party after the performance was totally fun. I sat with Derrick Jones who is retiring after the current tour completes. He's getting married in June and his wedding will be a performance art/dance piece. Check out their website TheWeddingJourney.com to read all about it. All I can say is "wow"!
