Man, I had one of those days at the dentist's - a permanent crown installed, one filling, and one sanding.
It wouldn't have been so bad, except the nerve nub that used to be a tooth refused to get numb. And of course, the recalcitrant tooth was my lower right back molar - just the trickiest and most painful area in the mouth to numb up. It took four shots to get me numb. And of course, we need to remember here, that I have a major shot phobia. And novacaine shots are right at the top of the scary shot list.
After the second shot we thought we had the area numbed up - I could still feel some sensation, but I didn't think it was a big deal.
UNTIL, the dental assistant touched my raw exposed nerve nub with the cold, very pointy, very metal dental instrument. I had to be peeled off the ceiling.
So, back to the scary needle. After two more shots, my mouth was so numb that Laurence Olivier in the Marathon Man could have come after me and I wouldn't have felt a thing.
An hour and a half after I first sat down, I finally staggered and drooled my way back to work. I have to say that I was not at my best for the remainder of the afternoon.
