Tonight, was one my favorite annual events. Eilene, one of my (many) ex-bosses (my favorite ex-boss of all time), is in town for her yearly visit. We always get together for a fabulous dinner at the Marx Brothers. And tonight was no exception - stupendous food: Macademia Nut Encrusted Halibut, and Yukon King Salmon with King Crab Infused Mashed Potatos. Great wine - a bottle of Chalone Chardonnay. And of course, great conversation - except when we discussed the passing of our pets - that was sort of teary.
Just an absolute good time!

Interior Alaska is basically on fire. Within the past week, several major forest fires have burst into action. The very hot weather over the past two weeks has resulted in several very large fires - multiple 100,000 acre fires.
Fires that large generate tons of smoke. But, Anchorage has actually been lucky on the smoke front. On Sunday, a big ol' cloud bank moved in and really hasn't budged since then. The clouds are blocking the majority of the smoke. But as the fires have increased in both size and number, the smoke has been seeping into the cloud cover. My eyes started burning for the first time today and my asthma has definitely noted the arrival of air particulates. However, I have to say that I've never seen both clouds and forest fire smoke intermingled. Very odd - totally like a nasty nasty case of smog.
The clouds broke up a bit tonight and the sun definitely has that smokey look about it. We will really begin to suffer if the clouds break. The rest of Interior Alaska is operating with about 30 feet of visibility.
Here's my attempt at an artsy smokey sun shot. The sun's smokey reflection on the marshy lagoon.
