This being Alaska, fireworks extravaganzas are a bit difficult to pull off in the summer - the twenty three hours of light are definitely an issue. But that doesn't mean we don't try.
Anchorage's July 4th fireworks display gets underway at the very late hour of 11:30 PM. The sun has set, but because of our extreme latitude, dusk lasts for a very long time and it is still pretty bright at 11:30 PM. But, if the city waited until it was sort of dark, the fireworks wouldn't start until 1:30 AM. So, 11:30 PM it is...
Peter and I were pretty pooped last night - Peter had flown in from Sarasota and I was my usual tired self. So, the Ski Boy, Clemmie and I crawled into bed pretty early and were totally zonked by the time 11:30 PM rolled around. However, a split second after the first kaboom, Clem's head shot up and she got very worried. After the second kaboom, Clem hurriedly got up, came up to the head of the bed, quickly turned around around, and plunked her seventy-five pound Bouvier self down between Peter and me. She then made her loud Wookie worried noises for the next 45 minutes as the kabooms continued. Peter and I petted her and she hung in there. We almost lost her at the finale, but she bravely soldiered on.
Today, she's a very happy pooch - no more Blue Angels and no more Fourth of July Fireworks.
