Tonight, Mom and I had dinner at Sack's to celebrate the 39th Anniversary of our arrival in Alaska.
I'd say that for the past ten years, we've made it a point to celebrate our anniversary. It's a very big deal. As Mom said this evening, just about every Alaska resident (other than those who were born here), can tell you the exact date they arrived and what they did on the day they arrived.
Here's Mom and I at dinner this evening:

The big news here in Anchortown is that the new twin roundabouts at Dowling Road were opened this morning. Prior to today, Anchorage only had one roundabout which is located in a neighborhood. The Dowling roundabouts are located on one the busiest streets in Anchorage. I thought the idea of roundabouts at Dowling was one of the stupidest things I'd ever heard of.
However, this morning, just for grins, the Ski Boy and I took a little road trip down to Dowling to do the roundabouts. And, I have to say, it was a total blast! Of course, we went through the roundabouts at 11:00 AM on a Sunday morning - not one of your high traffic periods. But, still, they seemed to be well designed and well signed and painted. Who knows? They may actually work.

I've just returned from Ester Nugent's memorial service. It was a wonderfully open, and for the most part, happy event. Ester was ninety years old and lived a most amazing life. She was one of my all time favorites. Ten years ago, Ester developed Alzheimer's Disease and started down that long slow decline Alzheimer's decline.
I hadn't seen her in many years, but I thought of her often. I adored being with her - she was funny, smart, knew absolutely everyone, made the best macaroni and cheese in the world, and was connected in one way or another with just about every significant Alaska event of the past fifty years.
In this day and age, it's not often that one gets to meet a real pioneer. Alaska, because of its youth as a state, its harsh climate, and its opportunities attracted a stunning collection of modern day pioneers. And Ester was certainly one of those.
Alaska isn't really like that anymore. But when I was growing up, it was still definitely the frontier and I was extremely fortunate to have known so many people like Ester.
