I took refuge from the smoke this evening at the Bear Tooth Theatre and watched The Control Room.
I hate to take refuge in a cliche, but the movie really is thought provoking. It's quite good. But where it really shines is showing the shattering of extreme beliefs on both sides of the Iraqi war. The movie surprisingly, has a sweet nature. It's not at all polemic. And it doesn't need to be. People are just themselves and it really comes through - both with the young US Marine Media officer and the various Al Jazeera folks. The truth just oozes out as the movie progresses.
The one individual who does not come off at all well is Rumey. Man - he is his own worst enemy. I really cannot stand him. But he doesn't need any help from me nailing his own coffin shut.

Well, the great smokeout of 2004 continues. The smoke is actually worse today than it was yesterday. The mountains are completely gone. The smoke itself is just hanging among the trees and buildings. It's very much like those cold Fall mornings, when fog winds its way through the marshes.
And of course, we obliterated another temperature record: today's high was 81 degrees. The old record was 72 degrees set back in 1944. August is not normally a warm month here in the Frozen North.
The breathing pretty much sucks - almost literally. My asthma has definitely ratcheted up several notches and my voice is very hoarse. I sound like a gnarly Jessica Rabbit.
Here's a view of tonight's sunset from the mudflats. Because the view is southwest, its not as smokey. The smoke is coming in from the northeast. The view to the north is completely obscured.
