One of the total bummers about living in Alaska is the transient nature of the population. People come and go fairly frequently. Work is usually the reason - folks get transferred up here and folks get transferred elsewhere. It can really suck. Over the years, I've had so many friends leave. The one positive is that several of them have returned.
Tonight, I attended a going away party at Sack's for Becky, a longtime friend who was a founding member of our bookclub sixteen years ago. It was definitely bittersweet. She and her husband are off to Houston. They're excited about the opportunity, but extremely sad about leaving. There is not a whole lot of cross country skiing in Houston.

My half brother Leland, is a tv news satellite uplink operator. He's one one those guys who drive who drive and operate the little new white trucks that have those big long extension poles with a satellite dish on top.
Leland is usually at all the big news events. This week, he was in Florida for Charley and took a bunch of pictures. I particularly liked this one of a completely demolished service station. The only thing left in one piece was the car on the lift rack:

Yesterday morning while out running, the Ski Boy spotted a number of Beluga Whales right off of the Coastal Trail. This is welcome news! Beluga whale sightings used to be fairly common in here in Anchorage. But there haven't been many whales spotted here in recent years.
Belugas are cute - they're small - as whales go. They're white and are skads of fun to watch rolling through the waves.

This morning, on a lark, I did the Humpy's race. I being a wimp, walked the 5K as opposed to doing the Marathon or Half-Marathon. But it was still fun and I walked quite briskly. I think I finished in about 51 minutes - which isn't bad for a saunterer like me.
I did the race because I adore Humpy's - a truly fabulous bar. And, this is embarrasing to admit, but I also wanted the t-shirt.
My one great disappointment was that because I finished at 9:30 AM, there was no beer available - in Anchorage, bars can't serve alcohol before 10:00 AM. sigh...
