Clemmie has moved into early elderly dog status. She's just turned twelve and has nasty arthritis (kept in check by Etogesic and bi-weekly Ataquan shots. Ataquan is a miracle drug).
Anyhoo, over the past few weeks, I've also noticed that her hearing had deterioated a bit - maybe by about 20%. Now, I've had lots of old pets and the hearing definitely goes. And sometimes it can go very quickly. It just sort of reaches a tipping point and then falls off the edge.
However, I had also noticed that Clem was scratching her ears a little bit. Not much, but just a smidgen right before bed time. So, when were in at the vet's today for Clem's Ataquan shot, I asked the vet to take a gander at Clemmie's ears.
Well, the good news is - and this is normally not good news - Clemmie has an ear infection. Which definitely explains the scratching and quite possibly explains the sudden hearing loss.
She's on ear drops for the next few weeks. And then hopefully her hearing will be back to normal. Of course, she'll still ignore me when she doesn't want to do something. But at least I know that she'll actually be able to hear me.

It's the last week in August - which in Alaska means the very beginning of Fall, the start of the State Fair, back to school sales, and the end of the summer hiatuses (haitu?) of all of my various civic on non profit organizations. sigh...
Last week, I attended two Concert Association meetings and one Government Hill Community Council meeting. Tonight I had a meeting with the EPA regarding Government Hill input/involvement on a multi-year cleanup project.
Gads - talk about hitting the ground running. This year could be very analogous to yesterday's Olympic Women's Marathon.

Last night, I caught Coffee and Cigarettes at the Bear Tooth. What a great little movie - eleven black and white vignettes using coffee and cigarettes as a common centering device. Each vignette is really a duet between two actors - usually playing themselves. Several of the vignettes also include a third character - the waiter. If you like iconic irony, humor, and whimsy, this movie is for you.
Most of the vignettes are very very funny - in a smart and sometimes uncomfortable way. And the actor pairings were great - Tom Waits and Iggy Pop were a scream. Iggy was very sweet and goofy. Tom was quite manipulative and got poor Iggy turned inside out. The episode with Gza and Rza of Wu-Tang Clan and Bill Murray as their waiter was absolutely priceless.
I loved the scene with brother and sister combo of Jack and Meg White of the band White Stripes. They were so post punk hip. Jack's Tesla coil was priceless. Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan were painfully hilarious. And the final vignette with Warholian icon Taylor Mead and Bill Rice was really quit sweet.
Definitely a great little movie. Although the reviews were decidedly mixed.

This totally adorable picture was forwarded to me by a friend from Texas. It was supposedly taken at Eielson Air Force Base here in Alaska. Usually, I'm very suspicious of these types of photos - one can perpetuate all sorts of photoshop frauds. However, it's my guess that this picture is for real and not photoshopped - the moose shadows are correct, the placement of the moose on the grass looks totally right, and the nature of the light is very Alaskan.
