I've kept a daily, non-blog, journal for almost seven years. I bought my first journal at Shanghai Tang's in Hong Kong in 1997. It was a fabulous journal, bright purple padded silk cover, golden rod pages - just totally smashing.
A year later after I had almost filled up the Shanghai Tang journal, I went shopping for a new journal. Well, let me tell you - there was absolutely nothing that even came close to my Shanghai journal. As I was futilely shopping, it dawned on me that I really had to LOVE the journal I was writing in. Those drab boring journals just would not cut it.
One day, when bored in a meeting at work, I noticed that one of my fellow meeters was using a bound book as a notebook. Well, as I peered closely at the notebook, it dawned on me that I could make my own journal.
That afternoon, I zoomed over to Barnes and Noble, bought a book on book binding and basically learned how to make journals. Finding book binding tools and journal construction materials in Anchorage is a little tricky. But fortunately, I discovered Talas in New York City - the book binding supplier in the US.
So, it is now a personal requirement that I make my own journals. Which I have to say is a lot of fun. There have been a few that I haven't really liked that much - but I filled them up before moving on to a new model. I find that I really prefer bright primary colors. My rational is that if even my writings aren't that happy, at least my journal looks happy!
So speaking of bright happy primary colors, below is the latest model. This is the first time I've done an open spine - I decided to have some fun with coptic stitching. We'll see how it holds up after a year of heavy use.
