We have a neighborhood fox - this guy is pretty young. Just a yearling. So, he's still scrawny and unsure of himself. And extremely vocal - usually between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM.

Last night, for the third time in as many weeks, we were awakened by the most wretched blood curdling scream you can imagine. A fox scream is similar to the sound of the worst human/inhuman scream you've ever heard and several decibels louder. The fox screams when things aren't going well for him. The first time he screamed, I zoomed out of bed, looked out the window and there he was, pinned in a corner by one of our not very big, neighborhood cats. The fox managed to extricate himself and run away and the cat took off after him.

This should give you some idea regarding the overall foxy competence level of our youngster.

We're finally getting used the screams. But they can be jarring - such as early this morning at 3:00 AM, when started screaming in the cul de sac. The cul de sac seems to work very well for him as a scream zone - he gets a lot of great reverb off of the houses.

This morning, I plopped into my car after stopping to pick up my morning decaf americano. I flipped on the radio and by shear luck stumbled into one of my favorite NPR traditions - the reading of the Declaration of Independence by NPR hosts, reporters, commentators, and newscasters. It is so powerful - it gets me every year I hear it.

There are two major wildfires within 30 miles of Fairbanks. Fortunately, this afternoon, the winds changed just a tad and started blowing the fires away from Fairbanks. Which is good news - for the first time that I can ever remember, I thought Fairbanks might have to be evacuated.

As you can see from this Daily News picture, the smoke was unbelievably thick in Fairbanks.
