Below is Jay Nichols' obituary. Jay was my cousin Lisa's husband. His death was such a shock. And a huge loss for Jillian, their daughter.
John James Nichols
John James Nichols March 11, 1952 - July 5, 2004 John J. Nichols, known as "Jay", age 52, died suddenly while swimming laps in a pool near his home in Walnut Creek. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Jillian, as well as his mother, Kathleen, brother, Robert, sisters, Kathleen Fasano and Alyson Attinello, four nieces and a nephew. Jay was a geotechnical engineer with the California Department of Transportation. He had formerly worked for American Electric Power Company and then Bechtel Engineering, a position that took the Nichols family to Hong Kong for four years. An ardent sportsman all his life, Jay ran cross-country at Notre Dame University, was an enthusiastic tennis player and enjoyed scuba diving at famous locations throughout the world. He took pleasure in making and editing underwater videos and in rose gardening. During the last year Jay and his daughter, Jillian (11), climbed Mt. Diablo, skied and ran together. They shared tennis lessons and worked on her baseball, soccer and basketball skills. Friends are invited to a funeral service at Oak Park Hills Chapel, 3111 North Main Street, Walnut Creek on Monday, July 12 at 10am. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10006 (212) 315-8725. Oak Park Hills Chapel (925) 934-6500
