A longtime family friend passed away yesterday. Esther Nugent (nee Lounsbury) died after a long bout with Alzheimer's.
Esther was one of those pillar of the community sorts. Her first husband was a mayor of Anchorage - the '64 quake occured during his term. She was extremely active in the arts community and in civic affairs.
But, all of that non-withstanding, she was simply one my favorite people of all time. A wonderful person. She and her husband Bill used to have me over once a month for the world's best macaroni and cheese and a round of pinochle. Clemmie and I would go for long walks and stop by their house for goodies.
The on-set of Esther's Alzheimer's was very sudden and she withdrew rather quickly. I never saw her again after the diagnosis. Which is heartbreaking.
