This morning, Tyge and I witnessed a brutal little display of the Circle of Life. We were in the midst of our morning constutional along the Lagoon when we literally walked into a huge mass of gulls - they were flocking, swooping, and screeching - they even started dive bombing Tyge and me. I could not figure out what was going on.
Then Tyge did a Gunner like bird dog point. I looked in the direction of his "point" and there was a little duckling in the weeds - with no Mom duck in sight. It suddenly became sickeningly clear what the commotion was about. Those gulls were after the duckling. sigh...
In an attempt to shield the duckling, Tyge and I stepped closer to the duckling. At first, our little shield seemed successful - the duckling hid himself deep in the weeds, the gulls lost interest and moved on. So Tygey and I continued our walk.
However, on our way back, all at once the gulls started flocking again. We hurried back to ground zero - which by the time we arrived, an over-the-top gull mob lynch mob was in full swing. Our little duckling and a sibling were in the water and were determinedly paddling away from the shore towards the middle of the lagoon - and there was no Mama duck anywhere in sight. The gulls were relentlessly bombing the plucky little ducklings and it was only a matter of time.
Tyge and I turned away before nature took its course.
I know things are tough in nature and I get the whole Circle of Life thing. But I've never been a big fan of gulls and today's little episode didn't improve the gulls' polling numbers. If I'd had shotgun handy, there would have been a fair number of gull feathers floating back down to the lagoon.
