I spent this afternoon with my best friend Cheri, aka Maid of Honor, aka Wedding Gown Seamstress.
This whole wedding dress thing is quite the production. We're not using a pattern per se. Instead, we found a picture of the most fabulous, and elegant gown. We're now in the process of extrapolating the gown's engineering from the picture. And when I say, "we", I'm not part of the 'we". Kirsten, a co-worker of Cheri's, has a Masters in Costume Design, and put herself through college by working in "Bridal" for several years. Kirsten and Cheri are the engineers - I'm just the model.
Today was the start of layer one - evidently this dress will have six - maybe seven layers. Wow! Layer one is bodice like and sets directly on top of the bustier. And then we layer out from there.
My favorite part was a discussion with Kirsten regarding the fat that pooches out between the arm and the chest when one is wearing a strapless gown. Evidently, that's the number one concern of all brides. Even anorexic runway models have this issue.
The problem is corrected with a strategic positioning of the, ahem, breast and nearby adipose tissue and an application of double sided tape!!! Who knew????
