Second day of the Daria marathon on Noggin. How did Noggin fit so many commercials per episode? Six episodes per night or so, repeated once.

[Later:] They’ve definitely been chopping up these episodes. I believe some of the Sick Sad World commercials, and in “Road Worrier,” the REM “Everybody Hurts” subtitled thoughts sequence. That was a very marked and noticeable absence in one of my favorite episodes.

[Much later:] It’s not even as if they’re selling all this airtime to advertisers—they seem not to be selling any commercial time at all to anyone but themselves: it’s full of commercials for their three other shows (no joke!) and large digressions about adolescent fantasies and individuality rants.

[Too-much-coffee-man later:] 24seven looks like an interesting soap opera though, and not too heavy-handed. Degrassi is heavy-handed.

Programming language pr0n: Still waiting for Smalltalk, Prolog, and, like Cory Doctorow, HyperTalk, the HyperCard scripting language. How about preVue-X? etc. [by way of Cory Doctorow’s boingboing directory of wonderful things.]

Some things to keep in mind whatever your development culture: Geek Culture Considered Harmful. Andy Lester's Lightning Talk at Yet Another Perl Conference takes aim at the practice of flaming, especially when it turns away open source volunteers. [by way of Meerkat: An Open Wire Service]
Real people don't need to call their colleagues "fuckhead".

...

So what can you do? What can you, personally, do to keep Perl fun and useful for all?

First, get off your high horse. No one is any better than anyone else. "Open Source means anyone can join the party as an equal participant."[Ed.: a Tim O’Reilly quote]

Second, think before you type. What you say will be archived, logged or otherwise stored in some permanent form for Google to pick up within days. This goes for IRC logs, too. "This will go down on your permanent record" has never been so literally true.

Third, don't accept it from others. Some people may need private reminders of varying firmness, but they do need them. In some cases, I do think we need to act as our brothers' and sisters' keepers.

Finally, remember this: We're all fuckheads sometimes. Cut the other fuckhead a little slack, willya?

Also, a movie on what happens when a Python-using Perl newbie attends the YAPC. Funny, if you’re a geek, but if you are, better put those keyboards away.
