I noticed that I had some unfilled links in some posts. Okay, a new convention: !!! denotes something I would like to fill in later. This way I can use Sherlock to search contents of my weblog archive on-disk periodically and fill in gaps that would otherwise leave lacunæ in my public weblog.

Update: Hm. I found I was wrong.

The Atlantic City route did not go as well as hoped. Now I am parked hopelessly far from the door and I hear thunder outside. Not that I see it from inside my cubicle.

At least there is an Ethernet link.

Debate over whether to defend animal research, a New York Times link.

Which brings up the question: how many drug-addicted AIDS victims did POET kill? How many crystal-meth cats did they save? Is there a right way to balance this equation?

And you thought the cat riots stopped when ancient Egypt was Christianized.

Jared’s spin: http://www.gaeldesign.com/ib/index.php (need to find a permanent link later !!!)

My take:

  • Geek factor: most people using Mac OS X are coming over from the Unix side?
  • Most OS 9 folks figure there's not enough in the Office X update to justify the cost?
  • OS X users of Office software figure that the latest release is going to be very short-lived and are waiting for the next revision, even though the Classic underpinnings of their current version is giving them severe hissy fits (ahem)?

This is what I was going on about earlier in a Slashdot article I cannot find !!! when I wrote about how Apple is losing touch with the familial spirit that animates its fervent followers. The kind of atmosphere described (being on site, I could not take a vacation and attend this year, what with the economy being what it is, and all) is not the kind that likes to go to “official sources” for its news; it prefers the camaraderie found in the little news outlets, the ones that also indulge in out-and-out speculation and misinformation.

What is it with me and smilies the last couple of days? Don’t I trust the writing to speak for itself? Don’t I trust the reader to properly infer my mood and intonation?

Obviously not.

:.)

Aargh.

Harris was at MM&J Monday, and of course he always jumps in about the Mac thing. Two people I know who have at least some Mac leanings at this company mention the Mac, and Harris points them at me. I manage to go a week without polemicizing or preaching to the converted, and all of a sudden I am the Mac guy. I’ve been content for the most part to let the TiBook speak for itself, and, oh boy, does it speak.

Ed (not my brother) came up today and complimented it, bringing up the total of walk-up compliments to, um, five at this site? The TiBook is a very approachable machine. Meanwhile, he described a problem with the DVD on his PC to S-Video that I had not encountered. I tried to puzzle it out with him, but got nowhere he had not tried.

Where was I? Oh, Harris. I guess he’s trying to build connections, trying to be more of a salesman. But I thought I was not supposed to talk about religion while on site.

Each decision you make is one more opportunity for you to screw up. Casinos work on this principle, providing a very high rate of decisions, creating more and more chances for you to give them your money.

It also works in driving. The more you have to think during your commute, and the more decisions you must make, the higher the probability that you will somehow screw up royally. The drive through Route One does keep me awake, though rather irritable.

I think I can pare the Atlantic City Expressway route to about an hour and fifteen minutes if getting out of the city is not too bad, and if I were to speed, which would be wrong. As long as I don’t fall asleep on the way.

Coming here to Atlantic City gave me two opportunities to blow it that I did not pass up. On I-676, I exited towards the Ben Franklin Parkway, rather than the Ben Franklin Bridge. On the way to the AC expressway, I exited to eat at a no-longer-existing (I suppose) Friendly’s, then wandered around before getting back onto I-42.

US-1 S to BFB would probably be jammed during rush hour, so I need to ask someone a better route.
