This is an old but fairly well-maintained site. Winchell Chung’s 3-D Starmap page has a lot of amateur information on how to convert star catalog data (such as the Gliese and Hipparcos catalogs) into three-dimensional coordinates, suitable for modeling, and, if the fancy (or the big fat leisure stick) strikes you, racing and crashing into each other.

I think the lack of the “What friends?” option on two of those questions seriously skewed my results, though.
