To think on...
Evolution of Words That Aren't There. Behind the concept of the separation of church and state, a scholar finds some unsettling origins. By Peter Steinfels. [due to New York Times: National]
Basically, according to Hamburger: the phrase “separation of church and state” has its origins in Jeffersonian campaigns against the Federalist position and its concomitant clerical elements—how ironic! The current sentiment animating the phrase, according to Hamburger, has its origins in nativist (that is, anti-Catholic) sentiment and was a rallying point for the KKK—how sad.
