A Different Kind of Tragedy
For me, at least, the death of astronauts and the loss of a spacecraft feels very different than military casualities or the crash of a passenger plane. Not to be naive about the military applications of space exploration, or the tradeoffs required to fund a space program instead of projects with more immediate payoff, but there remains something noble and unique about NASA's mission. It's the application of science to expand human frontiers, the courage of the highly-trained crews, the sense that what these people are doing is done to some degree for all of us, everywhere.
