A Plan for South Elm Street
In this morning's newspaper column, I propose a project for the desolate corner of South Elm and Lee in downtown Greensboro: build an ACC basketball hall of fame. It's doable. Would it turn the neighborhood around all by itself? Of course not. But it would be a big first step, and that's what we need.
The Anonymous Space Program
Elijah and Sydney don't really understand why the space shuttle crash is such a big deal. Why should they? For all of their young lives, space shuttles have been taking off and landing with boring regularity. The flights have been routine. There is no drama. Why should they feel what I feel? When I was seven, men walked on the moon, and when I was in second grade we waited for Apollo 13 to make it home safely. My kids thrilled to the movie version of Apollo 13, but it was ancient history to them. Yesterday struck them as sad, but not devastating.
