MORE MALPRACTICE: O.J. McDuffie, former NFL

DAVIE, Fla. -- Palm Beach Post reports the attorney for former Dolphins wide receiver O.J. McDuffie plans to have the complaint and discovery papers served this week to physicians John Uribe, Michael Thorpe and Dan Kanell. The doctors will have 20 days to respond to the complaint, either filing a motion to dismiss or filing responses to the allegations. After another 20 days a trial could be set. McDuffie is seeking damages, claiming the doctors' negligence regarding his toe injury prematurely ended his career.

WINS MALPRACTICE SUIT: Jeff Novak, former NFL

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Times-Union reports In a verdict with potential implications for professional sports, a Jacksonville jury on Friday awarded $5.35 million to former Jaguar Jeff Novak, finding that team doctor Stephen Lucie's negligence cut short Novak's football career.

FAILS TO APPEAR: Alonzo Spellman, former NFL

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Associated Press reports former NFL defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman, who has a history of psychological and legal problems, failed to appear in court Tuesday to answer charges of drunken driving and destroying property. Spellman was arrested July 16 after Dearborn police received a report of a home invasion and reckless driving. He was released on $600 bond pending arraignment Tuesday in 19th District Court on misdemeanor charges of drunken driving, driving on a suspended license and destruction of property.

 ARRESTED: Glenn Robinson, Milwaukee Bucks

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Associated Press reports Milwaukee Bucks forward Glenn Robinson was released on $5,000 bail Sunday after being arrested for shoving his former fiancee in her house. Robinson is expected to appear in court Aug. 19 for a preliminary hearing, according to Marcy O'Boyle, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.

 ARRESTED: Scott Erickson, Baltimore Orioles

BALTIMORE -- Associated Press reports Baltimore Orioles pitcher Scott Erickson was charged Monday with assaulting his girlfriend after she confronted him about whether he was being faithful to her, police said. Erickson, 34, and Lisa Ortiz had a "heated argument'' that ended with Erickson throwing her to the floor of an elevator in the building where they live, according to a police report.

CONVICTED: Timmy Murphy, Irish jockey

LONDON -- Reuters reports leading Irish jump jockey Timmy Murphy has been jailed for six months for indecently assaulting a female flight attendant and being drunk on board an aircraft in April. A spokesman for Isleworth Crown Court said Murphy had pleaded guilty to the two charges arising from the incident, which took place on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Tokyo to Heathrow on April 14 this year.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Associated Press reports the University of Arkansas has extended scholarship penalties for two years after acknowledging to the NCAA that a booster's overpayment to players he employed was more serious than previously stated.

APOLOGIZES: Rick Neuheisel, University of Washington

SEATTLE -- Associated Press reports Washington football coach Rick Neuheisel, the subject of an NCAA probe of recruiting at Colorado, apologized to an NCAA committee for any "inadvertent errors." Neuheisel, Colorado's coach from 1995-98, also said he has voluntarily limited his own off-campus recruiting for Washington.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Associated Press reports lawyers for a group of basketball fans suing Indiana University's trustees over Bob Knight's firing have expanded their lawsuit to accuse the panel of meeting secretly to discuss budget issues.

MOTION DENIED: Tournament Promotors

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Associated Press reports a federal judge said it's too soon to determine whether the NCAA's rules restricting participation in certain nonconference basketball tournaments violate federal antitrust laws. U.S. District Judge Edmund Sargus Jr. denied a request by a group of tournament promoters and organizers for a preliminary injunction which would have blocked the NCAA restriction limiting Division I schools to two such tournaments in four years.

GAG ORDER: Allen Iverson

PHILADELPHIA -- Associated Press reports a judge issued a gag order in Allen Iverson's assault case Monday, saying he wanted to ``buffer'' prosecutors and defense attorneys from intense media coverage. Municipal Court Judge James DeLeon barred police, the district attorney's office and the lawyers involved from talking to reporters about Iverson's criminal case. He said he would revisit his decision after Iverson's preliminary hearing, scheduled for July 29.

BANNED: Jan Ullrich, German cyclist

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Associated Press reports 1997 Tour de France champion, Jan Ullrich, was banned from cycling for six months Tuesday after testing positive for amphetamines. Ullrich was given half the maximum suspension and was fined $1,400, the German cycling federation said.
