APOLOGY: Tamerick Vanover, San Diego Chargers

SAN DIEGO -- Kansas City Star reports San Diego's Tamerick Vanover is apologizing for his criminal convictions while he was playing in Kansas City. Two years ago, Vanover pleaded guilty to a federal car-theft charge, and he later testified how he financed drug deals that led to a conviction for drug trafficking and a jail term for former teammate Bam Morris. Vanover served four months in confinement himself, spending two months at a prison work camp in Miami and two months of house arrest in Lake City, Fla., in early 2001.

REFUSES TO SURRENDER: Raimondas Rumsas, cyclist

LYON, France -- Reuters reports Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas, embroiled in a doping scandal following the Tour de France, has put off plans to present himself to French police and opted to stay in Italy, his lawyer said. Lawyer Pierre-Louis Piloix, representing Rumsas in France, said the rider had decided to wait until the Lithuanian ambassador to France had seen his wife, who is being held in a French prison after customs officers found drugs in her car.

APPEAL DENIED: Felix E. Pinero, jockey

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Associated Press reports a state appeals court has upheld the five-year suspension of a jockey acquitted of fixing horse races at Penn National Race Course. Felix E. Pinero was suspended by the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission even though a jury found him innocent on charges of fixing the races.

NOT GUILTY PLEA: Branden Joe, Ohio State University

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Associated Press reports Ohio State fullback Branden Joe pleaded innocent Wednesday to a drunken driving charge. Joe was arrested Friday after police found him asleep in a car about 3:45 a.m. on a highway ramp near campus. Police said he refused to take a breathalyzer test.

CONVICTED: Danny Masaniai, Arizona State University

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Associated Press reports Arizona State senior defensive tackle Danny Masaniai entered a guilty plea earlier this week to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct with a weapon. He was sentenced to immediately begin 18 months of probation. He must also serve 30 days of jail time that is deferred to begin Dec. 15 and pay a $1,000 fine.  Following the plea, Arizona State suspended Masaniai for the first two games of the season. He was accused of shooting a pistol into air several times during a May 10 melee at a Tempe bar.

ARREST WARRANT ISSUED: Bobby Wade, Arizona University

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Associated Press reports Scottsdale police have issued an arrest warrant for Arizona senior wide receiver Bobby Wade after he failed to appear for a court date. Wade, 21, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct in an early-morning fight on June 23 in the parking lot of a Scottsdale nightclub, according to police.

ARRESTED: Alimzan Tokhtakhounov, Russian crime lord

FORTE DEI MARMI, Italy -- Associated Press reports an alleged Russian crime boss was arrested in Italy on U.S. charges he tried to fix the pairs and ice dancing figure skating competitions at the Salt Lake City Olympics, according to a federal criminal complaint filed Wednesday. Alimzan Tokhtakhounov was arrested at his resort in Forte dei Marmi in northern Italy. He was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit bribery relating to sporting contests. He faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 fine on each count.

CHARGES DROPPED: Eddie Kennison, Kansas City Chiefs

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Associated Press reports prosecutors have dropped charges against former LSU wide receiver Eddie Kennison, who was arrested in September following a dispute with a nightclub security guard. Defense attorney Nathan Fisher said the only formal charge ever filed against Kennison, who now plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, was failure to leave and the district attorney's office dropped that allegation on July 23.

REINSTATED: Billy Edelin, Syracuse University

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Daily Orange reports after spending what was supposed to be his freshman year at Syracuse suspended from the school, basketball player Billy Edelin will be readmitted to SU on Aug. 15. Edelin, a guard from Silver Spring, Md., who retains four years of eligibility, was suspended from SU for one year after two female students accused him of rape and sexual harassment last summer when the three were taking part in the Summer Start program, which gives first-year students the opportunity to take classes before the fall semester.

NCAA PROBE: Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. -- Associated Press reports the NCAA is investigating possible rules violations involving three Fresno State athletic programs, including the men's basketball team formerly coached by Jerry Tarkanian. The NCAA is examining whether a local Japanese restaurant fed basketball players for free and whether a sports agent provided benefits to a basketball player.

TICKETED: Keon Clark, NBA free agent

DANVILLE, Ill. -- Associated Press reports free-agent center Keon Clark was cited for marijuana possession and must appear in court next month. Clark, 27, was ticketed at 10:50 p.m. on Sunday for having about a gram of marijuana in his car, city attorney David Wesner said. Clark, formerly of the Toronto Raptors, was not arrested.

MISSING: Raimondas Rumsas, cyclist

LYON, France -- Reuters reports mystery surrounded the whereabouts of Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas, the rider embroiled in a doping probe, Wednesday after he missed a flight from Italy to Lyon where he was due to present himself to police. Lawyer Pierre-Louis Piloix, representing Rumsas in France, said he had not heard from the rider since Wednesday morning.
